Hard Platooning

Description

Hard Platooning (HP) is a novel concept that achieves platooning between commercial vehicles with the aid of a Smart Hard Connect (SHC) between the rear of the leading vehicle and the front of the following vehicle. The technology minimizes the safety and cyber security risks of conventional vehicle platooning through the use of a physical connection. The control of the following vehicles is governed by highly nonlinear dynamics. Current work involves analysis of system dynamics, development of nonlinear control strategies and full-scale experimentation on both class 8 trucks and transit buses.
